What’s in the media:
You may have heard of late some controversies regarding antioxidants, whether we should take them or not, if there are side effects from their use, etc. The study reviewed selected studies on antioxidants. It was a meta-analysis which examines results of previous studies and re-interprets them rather than a new study. In their review, they excluded over 400 trials that had no deaths. They then selected the trials that met their inclusion criteria, which effectively only included 8.3% of available evidence. Because the review excludes so many positive studies, it is an analysis of flawed data. It is also worthwhile noting that the researchers excluded trials on selenium. In contrast, Dr Correa, in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, published the research done on progression of pre-cancerous lesions and showed that there were clear benefits in taking vitamins. Meir Stampfer, a professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health, commented that this study does not advance our understanding and could easily lead to misinterpretation of the data. It is unfortunate that the media and medical journalism have chosen to perpetuate fallacies rather than critically examine facts.

Health Benefits of Dietary Fibre “Eat your greens”, that’s what we are all used to hearing when we were children. Broadly, dietary fibre can be classified into soluble and insoluble fibre. Soluble fibres are soluble in water, as the name suggests, and its action is to decrease transit time through the digestive tract. Soluble fibre also delays the absorption of glucose in the small intestine, hence lowering the Glycemic Index of carbohydrate food. Soluble fibre also decreases cholesterol reabsorption in the large intestine. Examples of soluble fibre are pectins, gums and mucilages. Insoluble fibre increases stool bulk and increases transit time through the digestive tract. Insoluble fibre is obtained from vegetables, wheat and whole grains.
Professor Jennie Brand-Miller from Sydney University has been instrumental in educating the public about the importance of Glycemic Index. Food containing carbohydrates are ranked according to the extent in which they raise blood glucose levels after eating.
Following the development of the Glycemic Index is the concept of Glycemic Load. Glycemic Load describes the quality (Glycemic Index) and quantity of carbohydrate in a meal or diet, e.g. watermelon has a high Glycemic Index, but the amount of carbohydrate in watermelon per cup is relatively low, as the bulk of it is water, hence watermelon has a high Glycemic Index but a low Glycemic Load.
When soluble fibre comes into contact with fluids in the gastrointestinal tract, they form a gel which delays gastric emptying and rate of absorption, which lowers the glycemic response following a meal. Extensive research has shown that an increase in soluble dietary fibre can contribute to a decrease in serum total cholesterol.
